Youth Issues Candidates Forum
On October 12, 2016 the Chase Youth Commission hosted the 15th Annual Youth Issues Candidates Forum from 6:00 – 8:00 pm in the auditorium at University High School. Youth from Spokane County had an opportunity to hear candidates’ responses to questions developed by other area teens. This forum is unique in that all aspects of the forum are designed, organized, and moderated by teens of the Chase Youth Commission. During the previous months, the Chase Youth Commission asked a number of high schools to submit questions for the candidates. Matthew Newberry and Kendall Woodard moderated the debate.
This year’s forum featured candidates from the following races:
- County Commissioner District 1 – Candace Mumm & Josh Kerns
- County Commissioner District 2 – Shelly O’Quinn & Andrew Biviano
At the completion of the forum, Vicky Dalton and staff from the Spokane County Auditor’s office were on hand to provide ballots and tabulators to conduct a mock vote for the teens. Youth had the opportunity to vote for their favorite candidates as well as mock initiatives developed by the Chase Youth Commission in order to gain their perspective on issues.
Results of the mock election are as follows:
Candace Mumm 67%
Josh Kerns 33%
Shelly O’Quinn 41%
Andrew Biviano 57%
Initiatives:
STA Proposition 1
Yes 46%
No 13%
“Not only does the Commission give students vital and practical experience working on service projects, but it gives us the confidence to start and lead projects on our own.”
